Clean, strong eggs – naturally improved
Phytogenic feed additives, derived from plant extracts, essential oils and whole plants, have gained considerable interest in recent years thanks to their natural and environmentally friendly profile. Certain plant components offer antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects – bringing clear benefits for animal production. These include improved health, performance and reproductive success.
Natural defence – tested, trusted, effective
One phytogenic with proven bioactivity is Anta®Phyt. Standardised in-vitro tests have confirmed Anta®Phyt’s antibacterial action against common pathogens in livestock production, including Staphylococci, Streptococci and Clostridia. In practice, poultry supplemented with Anta®Phyt show drier litter, fewer footpad lesions, less diarrhoea and better feed conversion.
Why gut health matters for egg quality
A well-functioning gut is essential for effective digestion and nutrient absorption. In laying hens, disturbances in the intestinal microbiota (also known as dysbiosis) can damage the gut lining and reduce calcium uptake. The result: weaker eggshells and more dirty or broken eggs. Improving the balance of the gut microbiota has several positive effects: better gut structure, fewer sticky droppings, and improved litter quality. This, in turn, lowers the risk of egg contamination or damage.
Field trial in Brazil: Anta®Phyt in commercial layer production
At the 23rd BOKU Symposium in Vienna, Dr. Eckel presented the results of a field trial with Anta®Phyt in a commercial layer operation in Brazil. The farm housed 41,300 laying hens. During the trial, one clear and visible result was the improved quality of the faeces in the Anta®Phyt group – a strong indicator of better gut health.

Fewer clostridia, better eggs
The trial results showed clear benefits of Anta®Phyt supplementation. The number of Clostridia in the caecum was reduced by five log levels – a major reduction. At the same time, the number of dirty and broken eggs significantly decreased.
A healthy gut for high-quality eggs
For optimal eggshell quality, gut health and animal welfare must come first. Anta®Phyt offers a natural and effective way to support the intestinal health of laying hens – helping farmers reduce losses, increase efficiency and improve the quality of their eggs. That’s good news for production, sustainability and profitability.
