Rainy season: a challenge for raw materials

Moulds are everywhere. Warm temperatures plus a humid environment are optimal growing conditions. During rainy season, feed spoils even quicker because of elevated moisture levels. Fungal growth during storage drastically increases the risk not only of nutrient losses but also of mycotoxin contamination.

Preventative measures to avoid feed spoilage include proper storage conditions and the use of preservatives and mycotoxin binders, which should be applied as early as possible.

Our dream team to secure your feed

MoldCid is a highly effective preservative for the protection of raw materials and finished feeds. The propionic acid-based formulation decreases microbial activity in feed and markedly improves hygiene. This could be shown in a storage trial in warm and humid conditions. While moulds started to grow on the untreated control, MoldCid prevented spoilage during storage, even though the initial mould count was slightly higher at the start (Fig. 2).

However, even if your feed is protected against mould growth during storage, several different fusarium mycotoxins already formed during the vegetation period may still be present—with all the detrimental consequences that this entails for animal health and performance.

Meet mycotoxin multitalent Anta®Ferm

When it comes to mycotoxin damage, Dr. Eckel’s mycotoxin binder Anta®Ferm MT 80 is the solution of choice for both animal and farm. Due to its ability to bind a wide range of mycotoxins, the multicomponent binder Anta®Ferm MT80 is a proven measure in acute mycotoxin poisoning, especially if feed is contaminated by more than one mycotoxin.

An in-vitro test done with HPLC-MS shows that AntaFerm MT 80 has a sorption capacity of over 91 per cent against most common mycotoxins in feed (fig. 3).
